7 Things I Wish My Language Teachers Had Understood About Me as a Learner
I’ve taught languages for more than 40 years, but I’ve also been a language student for most of
my life—from French and Spanish in high school to Arabic, Malay, and Japanese while living
abroad, and Portuguese through Duolingo. Over the past six years, I’ve also studied German in
both face-to-face and online classes.
Across these experiences, especially in my German classes, I began to notice predictable patterns
in how learners think, struggle, and make progress—patterns that only became clear to me once I
was back in the classroom as a student.
In this keynote, I share seven practical insights I wish my language teachers had understood
about my classmates and me—and how those insights might change the way you think about
your students.
Due to lower-than-anticipated registration, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the upcoming conference. More details will be available soon.
