About CEAL
EAL programs help students learn English while also learning about Canadian cultural values, customs and social expectations. The goal of EAL programs is to provide students with planned systematic instruction and support that will enable them to speak the English language fluently, further their education and become productive and contributing members of Albertan and Canadian society. PROFESSIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
The Council for English as an Additional Language is excited to share our newest professional learning offerings: Experiential EAL Active Learning Strategies, Welcoming Refugees into Our School Communities, and Vocabulary Across Disciplines.
These sessions can be delivered virtually or in person and can be tailored to full-day, half-day, or shorter formats to meet your needs. To learn more about each session or to book professional learning for your team, click here or contact president@cealata.com.
Conference 2026
I’ve taught languages for more than 40 years, but I’ve also been a language student for most of
my life—from French and Spanish in high school to Arabic, Malay, and Japanese while living
abroad, and Portuguese through Duolingo. Over the past six years, I’ve also studied German in
both face-to-face and online classes.
Across these experiences, especially in my German classes, I began to notice predictable patterns
in how learners think, struggle, and make progress—patterns that only became clear to me once I
was back in the classroom as a student.
In this keynote, I share seven practical insights I wish my language teachers had understood
about my classmates and me—and how those insights might change the way you think about
your students.
The Council for English as an Additional Language invites all members to attend our Annual General Meeting.
